Born Hannah Golofski in 1923, Anne Klein resided in New York her entire life.





In 1939, when she had reached the age of 18, she was married. She took the surname of her new husband, Ben Klein, to become Anne Klein. A few years later, she started her profession as a fashion designer, somewhat departing from, but also drawing on her artist's training she'd received earlier that decade.





Junior Sophisticates, which focused on in fashion designs for younger women, was founded by Anne in 1948. She directed Junior Sophisticates for almost two decades up to she and Chip Rubinstein, her second husband, founded Anne Klein and Co. in 1968.





The next few years would be very successful ones for her. In 1969, she was awarded the Neiman-Marcus fashion leadership prize. The Coty Fashion Hall of fame chose to honor her name in 1971. And she shone alongside other design luminaries such as Yves St. Laurent, Pierre Cardin, and Christian Dior as she participated in the famous Versailles fashion show fund raiser for the estate in 1973.





In 1974, at 51, Anne Klein succumbed to cancer. Her firm was headed by Donna Karan until Karan resigned to build her own successful undertaking. Now Anne Klein and Co. continues to beknown as a cutting edge fashion design business specializing in elegant, everyday style for women.
